Backstory:
Violetta was bought as a young filly by a man, along with a colt. The man named her Violetta, and named the colt Marcello. He took them to his home and began to train them. Violetta found his ways a bit harsher than where she had been born, but he was her master and she his horse. Everytime he hurt her, she assumed it was an accident. After being trained alongside Marcello, things grew worse. Life became hard, and the man became harsher. Marcello often complained, saying that the man was abusive and should not own horses. Violetta always stood up for her master, saying it wasn’t that bad, and he was good deep down. Marcello always huffed and turned away from her. When Violetta was five years old, she was whipped so much she knew she had almost died. Marcello had been fuming when she recovered, but Violetta quietly forgave the master, and life continued on. When she and Marcello turned eight, the master took them out for a run. He harnessed them together with an unbalanced yoke, and told them to run alongside the river. He laughed when they almost fell from the unbalance, and Marcello grumbled under his breath. They began to turn around, but the yoke wasn’t cooperating. Suddenly, it snapped, and the horses were thrown into the river. The current was strong, and despite their efforts they couldn’t swim back to shore. The master ran for them, but he didn’t make it in time. Violetta saw rapids ahead, and she closed her eyes, dreading death. She heard the master curse and begin sobbing, yelling to them that he was sorry. She hit the rapids and blacked out. She awoke to find herself floating downstream in calm waters in a valley. She saw horses and called out, paddling toward the sloped bank. Several horses had gathered there when she reached it. She tried to pull herself out, but found she was tired and sore. She was helped out of the river. Violetta asked if they had seen another horse, and they nodded, gently informing her that Marcello was dead. After her grief, she became an important member of the herd, an elder sought out for advice.
